DĀNWÈI CĀNTĪNG

Portland’s eclectic food scene houses an extremely diverse range of cuisine and experience options. You could head to Slappy Cakes for a build your own pancake grittle or maybe Jackie’s for a beer while you watch your favorite team on TV. However, if you are looking for locally sourced ingredients, a street-style vibe, and metal bowls filled with new flavors, I would recommend that you grab your friends and head to Dānwèi Cāntīng.
This restaurant is inspired by the culture and taste of Beijing. Chinese home-style dishes make for an incredible sit down or takeout experience. The Chengdu Street Fries are tongue tingling, so why not wash them down with a craft cocktail while you wait for some steaming Lamb Skewers or my favorite, the Green Beans with Ota Tofu.
DĀNWÈI CĀNTĪNG means the “Work Unit Restaurant” as it is inspired by the place where workers in mid 1990’s China would eat.
Danwei is mindful from production to consumption. There is a beauty in restaurant culture, which flourishes when we learn the origins of the food we are eating. I wanted to take a deeper look into two items at Dānwèi, the Lamb Skewers (an option for our carnivorous pals), and the Tofu dish with green beans (for our herbivorical buddies). I asked owner, Dave Singh, about their suppliers and here is what I learned.
Lamb Skewer ($4): Cattail Creek is where Dānwèi gets their lamb. I used to swear off meat, knowing that it is much less sustainable than other sources of protein. However, “c’est la vie” and I missed it too much, so now it is about finding the most sustainable meat I can get. I guess Dānwèi feels the same way, because Cattail Creek is certified by the Global Animal Partnership and believes in giving animals the quality of life they deserve. They only munch on grass, clover, and forbs that grow free of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Not treated with hormones or antibiotics, the lambs can enjoy their lives outside.
Green Beans with Ota Tofu ($11):  Dānwèi supports their neighbor by supplying their customer base with fresh Ota Tofu. Located directly across the street, Ota Tofu is the oldest tofu factory in America, and has been supplying Portland with fresh tofu since 1911. They strive to maintain their historical importance to Portland’s Asian-American community while continuing to provide fresh and delicious protein that is environmentally conscious.

OREGON WINE LAB

This outdoor/indoor venue is a great spot to enjoy a charcuterie board with pals and share some giggles over a couple bottles of vino. The food cart located directly outside serves one of the best Bành Mí style rice bowls I have ever had. This spot has live music, yoga, and two adorable pups running around while you enjoy a glass (or 5) with your drinking buddies. If you live in Eugene and want to shake it up, I would head on over for a boozy Saturday experience and complete the event of the day with a nice long nap. Happy eating!
